Questions we get asked
Straight answers on councils, standards and what an engineer actually does. If yours isn't here, call — no question is too small.
Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall?
Often, yes. Walls over 1m usually need engineering, and the threshold can be lower depending on the site and the council controls that apply. If the wall retains a driveway, sits on a boundary or supports something above it, assume it will need design and check. Give us a call and describe it — we can tell you quickly.
What is AS2870 and why does it matter?
AS2870 is the Australian Standard for residential slabs and footings. It sets out how a slab must be designed for the site's classification — a measure of how much the ground is expected to move with moisture. Much of the Hunter sits on reactive clay, so this is the difference between a slab that performs and one that cracks.
Do I need a geotechnical report first?
We recommend getting one. It tells us what the ground is doing and gives us the site classification we need to design the slab, footings or retaining wall properly.
Can you certify work someone else designed?
We can inspect and assess the structural adequacy of structural systems and building elements for compliance with Australian Standards and local government requirements. What's possible depends on what's already been built and what documentation exists — call and describe the situation.
Do you design load-bearing wall removals?
We don't currently take on work that requires access under existing houses. If you're not sure whether your job falls into that category, give Peter a call and he can tell you.
How long will it take?
Turnaround depends on the project and current workload. Call and Peter will tell you where you stand before you commit to anything.
Which areas do you cover?
The Greater Hunter, including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens and Singleton. If you're just outside, call and ask — it depends on the job.
